George V. Woodling was a patent lawyer, engineer, author, and inventor.

Mr. Woodling was born in Logansport, Indiana and washed dishes for four years to pay for his tuition at Purdue University. Later, he taught engineering at Fenn College to pay for his law education.

An advocate of more public aid for higher education, Mr. Woodling gave financial assistance to a number of students.

Mr. Woodling entered private practice in 1933 and in 1935 was joined by Bruce B. Krost to found what is now the law firm of Woodling, Krost and Rust (WKR). Before WKR, Mr. Woodling worked as a patent lawyer for Westinghouse Electric Corp.

In 1947, as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, Mr. Woodling drew up and sponsored the Metropolitan Transit Authority Bill, which paved the way for creation of public transit systems in the state.

Among dozens of Mr. Woodling's inventions was a tube fitting designed to overcome breaking in hydraulic pipes. This invention was a key step to the formation of Flodar Corporation.

Described in newspaper accounts of his political activities as a deeply religious man, Mr. Woodling was a president of the Methodist Union of Greater Cleveland.

"We fly the airplane in the sky, swim submarines in the bottom of the ocean but we have not yet learned to walk on the face of this earth as brothers," he said in describing his political philosophy during his for the gubernatorial nomination.

Mr. Woodling wrote a book on patents for design engineers and a patent law textbook entitled Inventions and their Protections . In addition, he was the author of the book God Glorified Through Invention and Art.

He was a former member of the board of Fenn College and a lecturer in law at Western Reserve University. He was a member of the Cleveland Engineering Society and the City Club. He also participated in scouting in Rocky River.
